Avalon Centre is the sexual assault centre for the Halifax Region and is a feminist non-profit organization that focuses on sexual assault awareness and prevention, support and intervention services, therapeutic counselling, systemic and social justice advocacy.  We are committed to addressing the intersectionality of sexualized violence, misogyny, racism, and systemic oppression.  We support leadership and employment opportunities for women, trans, Two-Spirit, and non-binary people.

We strive to recruit board members who are aligned with our feminist intersectional, relational, trauma-informed philosophy and practises.  We are committed to ensuring the Board of Directors is representational of our communities and the people who access our services.

Avalon Centre is committed to building a diverse Board of Directors and staff team and encourages applications from candidates from Equity-Seeking groups who bring important perspectives to the work. Members of Equity-Seeking groups face collective barriers to participating in society due to historic, social, attitudinal, and environmental marginalization based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, and other challenges to equal access, opportunities, and resources. The following skills and experience are further assets: any knowledge or experience related to Avalon’s mission, programs, services, and model of practice as referenced above, board governance, strategic planning, and HR/personnel. We also value the lived experience of survivors on our Board.

Avalon Centre acknowledges and respects that members of the Board of Directors are volunteers committing unpaid work in support of the organization on top of paid employment, caregiving responsibilities and other commitments.  Currently the Avalon BOD meets once per month for 2 hours each plus an additional 3-5 hours/month on emails, board development, updates, and committee work. There may be additional hours/month for candidates who take an executive position or a spot on a committee. Here are the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Directors.

Members of the Avalon board, including the staff representative, will review all applications and select candidates for nomination to election.

Please feel free to contact the current board with questions via the email link below. If you are interested in applying for the Avalon Board, please fill out the application questionnaire and email it to board@avaloncentre.ca.
