After a year of work, the staff of the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre are pleased to release The Avalon Model : Empowering Individuals and Communities to Respond to Sexualized Violence policy document. The Avalon Model is meant as a template for government and communities to develop comprehensive sexual assault services throughout Nova Scotia.

Over the years, service providers and government officials have been asking us to document our unique approach to operating a sexual assault centre. The Avalon Model is the culmination of 29 years of front line work, delivering services to people who have experienced sexualized violence.

In early 2012, Avalon received a grant for The Avalon Model‘s development from the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women . Over the year, Avalon staff contributed firsthand knowledge and words of wisdom to writer Peggy Mahon.

The Avalon Model also integrates past policy documents by Pamela Rubin about the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program, the provincial sexual assault needs assessment and service options for youth.

The model is dedicated to all Avalon’s clients and to our dedicated Board Members and volunteers.
