Sexualized violence is a social issue!
We are all responsible to engage in the fight to end sexualized violence.
Sexualized violence — from rape or sexual assault to whistles and street harassment — are not just individual events; they are symptoms of how society treats and views women and trans* people.
Avalon is committed to challenging these root causes of sexual assault through public awareness and community mobilization.
Current Campaigns
I Don't Owe You
A campaign raising awareness around issues of entitlement, consent, and rape culture.
Start By Believing
A space to remind ourselves and others impacted by sexualized violence/abuse that we believe, support and love survivors.
Annual Campaigns
Sexual Assaut Awareness Month
The annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign, as presented by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.
Past Campaigns
Denim Day
In 1990, a rape conviction in Italy was overturned because the appeal court judges ruled that since jeans cannot be removed easily, the victim must have aided in their removal therefore implying consent.
Ask
We ask lots of questions to strangers and people we know, but we don’t always ask about consent with our sexual partners. Consent is often assumed and assumptions can be based on sexual assault myths and stereotypes.
Stop it ASAP
Stop it ASAP (Awareness of Sexual Assault Project) is an empowerment project between Avalon and YWCA Halifax’s Finding Leadership in Youth Women program and other community groups.
