Summer Student Job Opportunity:  Reception and Office Support


In accordance with the Canadian Summer Career Placement Program,


Candidates must be:

  • 16-30 years of age
  • Registered in an accredited education program full time for 2015/2016 and must be returning to a full time program in 2016/2017
  • Canadian citizen
  • Must be able to work full time


Candidate must not:

  • Be employed full time elsewhere
  • Be related to employees and Board members of the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre


Scope of the Position:

  • Work collaboratively with and under supervision of the Office Manager and Executive Director
  • Provide reception duties
    • Greet guests/clients and direct them to appropriate appointments
    • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate staff members
    • Respond to general inquiries re: Avalon programs and services
    • Provide general information and referral to other appropriate sources
  • Assist with day to day office duties, resource requests/distribution, preparing reports, filing, research, provide support to other staff members as required
  • Assist with preparation of Annual General Meeting
  • Assist with Special Projects
  • Other duties as required



  • Degree/diploma or equivalent experience in Social Sciences or Office Administration
  • Reception experience including general support and phone training
  • Computer skills and graphic/web design experience as asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Strong organizational, written and communication skills required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and capacity to work independently
  • Knowledge of community organizations within HRM and Nova Scotia
  • Familiarity with non-profits and community based feminist pedagogy an asset
  • Knowledge and experience in working in the area of gender-based violence/sexualized violence as asset
  • Able to work from a supportive, confidential, non-judgemental, trauma informed approach and feminist, anti-oppressive, intersectional analysis


The position will be 35 hours per week for 8 weeks between July and Augusut 2016
