New Board Members and Governance Changes Introduced at AGM

The Avalon Sexual Assault Centre introduced its 2020/2021 Board of Directors, as well as changes to its governance at its Annual General Meeting on September 30, 2020.

Outgoing Chair Louise Adongo introduced the new bylaws and policies as a necessary realignment to support the organization’s transformation. “The bylaws and policies reflect Avalon’s current and intended strategic direction, and create the structure for a diverse, inclusive and representative board with anti-oppressive governance practices.”

Five new directors were elected to the board: Nicole Blinn, Erica Clausen, Chanae Parsons, Dr. Patricia Celan, Meaghan Norris. They joined five directors who offered to be re-elected - Sue Goyette, JJ Steeves, Ardath Whynacht, Cara Pfeffer, and Catherine Crossley - along with staff representative Leticha Lucas. The five directors who were stepping down at the meeting - Louise Adongo, Kate Wright, Hilary Murphy, Martha Mutale, Anita Smith - were celebrated by both board and staff for their contribution to the organization through a challenging year.

Executive Director Jackie Stevens thanked all board members - new, outgoing, and returning - as well as staff and Avalon’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, for the commitment that all have brought to the organization’s transformation. “2019-2020 was challenging for Avalon, but a clarity of vision, a commitment to our communities, and a sharing of effort to prepare the ground for new shapes the organization must take enabled significant progress on that path.”
